Every BROKIS light is a one-of-a-kind creation, serving both a practical and artistic purpose that mesmerizes during the day and night. It was established by Jan Rabell, a prosperous Czech businessman, with the goal of rejuvenating and advancing Bohemian glass craftsmanship and protecting decades of expertise. Almost a decade earlier, in 1997, he took over the struggling Janštejn Glassworks, located about 140 kilometers southeast of Prague and founded in the early 19th century.
The demand for traditional products had significantly decreased, and many of the experienced glassmakers were retiring. As a result, there was a risk that the time-honoured technologies and techniques would be lost. To prevent this, Mr. Rabell had a vision to revive the factory’s former prestige and ensure that the centuries-old Bohemian glassmaking tradition continued into the 21st century. This led to the creation of BROKIS, a lighting brand offering completely different products from those previously produced at Janštejn Glassworks.
The company invested in building new Italian-style furnaces and refining production techniques. Some methods, such as grinding and glass painting, were discontinued while others like glassblowing using optic moulds and traditional hotshop techniques were revived. Additionally, Mr. Rabell reinstated original and nearly forgotten formulas for manufacturing coloured glass, which are now prominent features of the BROKIS brand.
