LUMEN CENTER
HISTORY
Established in 1976 in La Fare les Oliviers under the visionary leadership of Gilles Derain, LUMEN CENTER has a rich and storied history in the realms of design and lighting. As a prominent figure in contemporary French design and a member of the UAM (Union des Artistes Modernes), Derain’s aesthetic and design approach was shaped by the teachings of Jacques Adnet and his study of international modernism.
One of Derain’s most notable creations, the MCP lamp, debuted in 1979 and quickly became a commercial success, earning a place in the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. In 1992, the company was acquired by a Milanese entrepreneur, marking a new era of growth and consolidation in the Italian and international lighting market. Collaborations with renowned French designers, such as Jean Michel Wilmotte, further solidified the company’s reputation for excellence.
In the 1990s, LUMEN CENTER embarked on a groundbreaking interior design and illumination project for the Royal Pines Hotel in Urawa, Japan, titled “Life River.” This ambitious project, realized in partnership with VillaTosca Design and the European Centre for Design of Panasonic, showcased the company’s mastery of technical and production expertise, as well as its ability to adapt to unique and customized projects.
